Mark Allen and Ding Junhui played out one of the best matches of the season in the PTC Grand Finals in Galway.
Figures announced by Ireland’s MediaConsult company confirmed that over 100 million viewers in Asia alone tuned in to watch the live coverage.
The match itself was as near perfection as it’s possible to get.
Ding Junhui set the crowd roaring and the pulses races with a perfect 147 maximum break in the opening frame.
Allen hugged his Chinese opponent in congratulation after the brilliant achievement.
Undeterred by the excitement Allen settled down to take the next two frames helped by a run of 58, before Ding pumped in another total clearance, 138, to level the scores.
He followed that with 81 to take the lead. The high scoring continued as Allen ran in 125 to level the scores, but Ding still had a trick up his sleeve, compiling a third century, 108 to claim the decider.
Ding went on to lift the title on Sunday evening, coming from 3-0 down to defeat Neil Robertson 4-3.
“Well that was just ridiculous”, exclaimed Allen.
“I missed a couple of balls in the whole match, but that was a couple too many the way Ding was playing.
“Maybe my safety let me down because Ding’s scoring was ridiculous and I couldn’t afford to leave him any chances.
“It was an absolutely brilliant match to be involved in. It was a great atmosphere down here in Galway and the fans were really enthusiastic.”
Mark Allen’s busy season continues with an appearance in the Winners’ Group of the Championship League on Wednesday and Thursday.
Then the Haikou World Open champion flies back to China on Friday ready for the China Open in Beijing next week.
