Brendan O’Donoghue won the second Irish ranking event of the season yesterday as he overcame Rodney Goggins in a thriller 4-3 in Carlow.
147 Club’s Goggins had been gunning for back-to-back rankers following his success in Letterkenny last month, but fell just short as Nenagh’s O’Donoghue pipped him in a high-quality final.
O’Donoghue’s run to the final had been a difficult one as he ousted Michael Judge and Robert Murphy in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively while Goggins saw off David Cassidy and Benny O’Brien.
The former pro also took away the high break prize with a run of 109 added to a second century break of 107 as well.
While almost 64 players competed at the Ivy Rooms, there were a few notable absentees from the event with national champion Martin McCrudden again not entering, along with Josh Boileau, John Sutton, David Hogan and TJ Dowling.
