Ding Junhui Captures 6 Red World Crown

Ding Junhui won the 6 Red World Championship on Saturday after an 8-7 victory over Stuart Bingham in Bangkok.

Ding MastersThe Chinese no.1 compiled runs of 72 and 67 as he held off the Englishman in a tense decider to collect the £45,000 winner’s cheque.

After losing the first frame, Ding then gained control and led throughout the contest.

The Crucible runner-up boasted leads of 4-2, 6-4 and 7-5 but each time a gallant Bingham fought back and duly forced a deciding frame in front of a large crowd in Thailand.

Indeed, Bingham had the first opportunity in the last frame to claim the title but a gutsy 33 clearance from Ding meant the 29 year-old became the first Chinese player to emerge victorious in the shorter format.

It was a remarkable turnaround for Ding, who only scraped past the group stages after winning just two out of his five round-robin encounters.

The 11-time ranking event winner grew in stature as he progressed through the rounds, though, beating the likes of six reds king Mark Davis and last year’s finalist Liang Wenbo along the way.

His triumph also puts to rest some of the doubts over his guaranteed inclusion in the Champion of Champions later this year.

Ding had been set to feature through his appearance in the final of the World Championship despite not having won anything over the past year, but by collecting this trophy he will now earn his spot in Coventry completely by merit.

Next stop on the calendar is the Shanghai Masters, which will start next Monday in China.
