Today, April 8th, was supposed to mark the start of the 2020 World Snooker Championship qualifiers at the English Institute of Sport.
As it stands, we’ll have to wait and see if there are any new additions to the World Snooker Championship players list this year at all.
That’s because sport and normality as we know it has been turned upside-down as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 worldwide pandemic.
Several sports have been hit by cancellations and postponements, including snooker’s Word Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Usually at this time of year, fans start getting properly excited about the 17-day marathon of the mind to come.
The preliminary stage is special in its own right, with plenty of drama conjured up by those ranked outside the world’s top 16 who are hoping to grab one of the coveted extra spots available.
World Snooker Tour chairman Barry Hearn’s master plan has us hoping that the blue-riband tournament may be rescheduled in late-July.
However, the coronavirus situation in the UK will have to improve drastically in a short period of time for that ambition to become a reality.
On a disappointing day then, when we could have really got the juices flowing for the end-of-season snooker bonanza, there’s this very small consolation prize of a little quiz.
There have been 213 World Snooker Championship players at the Crucible Theatre since the tournament moved to its spiritual home in 1977.
Your mission, albeit a difficult one it has to be said, is to name them all.
Surnames on their own are accepted for every player, so you might at least get a few freebies that you wouldn’t have otherwise thought of as several players share the same family name as others.
This is a big quiz and you might want to do it on a bigger screen, but you will be given 20 minutes – the highest length of time allowed on Sporcle.
The question is, can you name all of the World Snooker Championship players? Good luck!
