Summary

Barry Hawkins has been an ever-present on the Main Tour since 2000, but it took a long time for him to establish himself as a top player.

He underachieved throughout his entire first decade or so on the professional circuit, underlined by an inconspicuous World Championship record that saw him lose his first five matches at the Crucible Theatre.

The Hawk’s career completely transformed upon the changing of eras around 2010 when Barry Hearn took over at the helm of the sport.

With increased playing opportunities, Hawkins was able to mount the confidence required to sustain a high level.

MORE PLAYER PROFILES:

Victory in the 2012 Snooker Shoot Out might have seemed liked small fish at the time, but it paved the way to his success in the Australian Open ranking event a few months later.

A year after that, Hawkins was contesting a World Championship final in Sheffield – putting up a stern test before being denied glory by Ronnie O’Sullivan.

In the five subsequent editions of the World Championship, Hawkins reached the semi-finals a further four times.

Two more ranking titles were also achieved in the form of the 2014 PTC Grand Finals and 2017 World Grand Prix.

In between, Hawkins also reached the title decider in the prestigious Masters only to confront an unstoppable O’Sullivan again.

With a career high of number four in the world rankings, the Englishman has built a reputation as being one of the toughest competitors among snooker’s supporting cast.

In 2023, he ended a six-year wait for a fourth ranking title with success in the European Masters – a year after finishing runner-up in the same event.
