Summary
Shaun Murphy first turned professional in 1998 at the age of just 15, and it understandably took him several years to settle.
However, when he eventually did announce himself as a big-time competitor, he chose the best possible place to do it.
At the 2005 World Championship, Murphy emerged from two qualifying rounds to qualify for the Crucible for the third time.
What ensued was one of the most memorable Sheffield runs in history, as a fearless 22 year-old powered his way through to the final.
Just as he had been throughout the event, Murphy started the title decider as an underdog but fought back from 10-6 down to pip Matthew Stevens in a thrilling 18-16 final.
Rarely short of self-made confidence built from a difficult childhood, Murphy used his newly acquired status to become an outspoken figure on a range of issues.
While the Magician was never quite able to match the achievements of the very best players in the world on a consistent basis, Murphy has landed several more notable titles throughout a stellar career.
UK Championship glory in 2008 was followed over six years years later by a Masters victory that completed the career Triple Crown set.
MORE PLAYER PROFILES:
One of his best wins came at the 2017 Champion of Champions when he denied Ronnie O’Sullivan the prestigious silverware in Coventry.
Perhaps the Englishman’s biggest regret will be not adding to his sole World Championship success, missing out on a second glory at the 2009, 2015, and 2021 finals.
But Murphy, who has reached a high of number three in the world rankings, has accumulated eleven ranking titles in total, taking him into the top ten on the all-time winners list.
He enjoyed a purple patch in 2023 when, after finishing runner-up in the Welsh Open, he triumphed in both the Players and Tour Championships before adding another glory at Championship League Snooker.
