Summary
Michael White was already generating headlines before he made his debut as a professional in 2007.
The Welshman became the IBSF world amateur champion at the age of 14 in 2006 and not long after added the European under-19 title to his impressive amateur haul.
White’s talent was undeniable, but it took him a while to overcome the early blows taken on the Main Tour as a teenager.
It wasn’t really until the 2013 World Snooker Championship that he finally announced himself to a wider audience.
White won two qualifying matches to reach the Crucible Theatre, where he duly beat Mark Williams and Dechawat Poomjaeng in a memorable run to the last eight.
The result sparked an improvement in White’s form and he quickly began to shoot up the rankings list.
MORE PLAYER PROFILES:
Less than two years later, White secured his maiden professional title with victory in the quick-fire Shoot Out – which at the time was staged as an invitational.
A week later, it was glory in a ranking tournament for the first time as he thumped Ricky Walden 5-0 to capture the Indian Open crown.
White’s performances helped him rise to career-high ranking of 15 in 2016, and a year later he acquired a second ranking trophy with victory in the Paul Hunter Classic.
However, soon after this his form began to spiral out of control and appearances at the business end of events became few and far between.
The situation got so perilous that by 2020 White had already slipped outside the world’s top 64 and was relegated from the Main Tour.
A player who has openly battled with depression, White at first struggled to regain his pro ticket.
But in 2022 he became only the second amateur to qualify for the venue stages of the World Championship, and he received a fresh opportunity to compete as a professional as a result.
