Summary

Matthew Selt first turned professional in 2002 as a teenager but enjoyed only a year on the circuit before being relegated.

The Englishman rejoined the elite ranks via the Pontin’s International Open Series in 2007 and has been an ever-present on the Main Tour since.

A player who has generally struggled for consistency, much of Selt’s career has been spent outside the top 32 in the world rankings.

For the next dozen years Selt struggled in the middle of the pack and only had a few ranking event quarter-final appearances to show for his efforts.

That one of those runs was at the 2015 UK Championship – one of the most lucrative events on the calendar – helped him to briefly threaten a spot among the top 16.

He reached a career-high of number 20 a few months later in 2016, a year when he also secured a maiden piece of silverware by winning the non-ranking Haining Open in China.

With his ranking and form continuously fluctuating, Selt’s fortunes dramatically changed in 2019.

MORE PLAYER PROFILES:

At that year’s Indian Open in Kochi, he beat John Higgins in the semi-final before a 5-3 triumph over Lyu Haotian in the title decider brought ranking glory.

The £50,000 was the biggest payday of his career and came at a time when he was suffering from gambling addiction – a habit he attributes to his lacklustre spells of form on the baize.

In the last few seasons, Selt has managed to maintain his place among the top 32, and during the 2021/22 term he reached the final of the Turkish Masters.

Not shy of voicing his opinions, he is regarded by some as the Marmite of snooker – liked by some but prone to rubbing people up the wrong way.
