Big names crash out on day one of English Open

Neil Robertson, Shaun Murphy, and Kyren Wilson all lost as the English Open commenced on Monday in Brentwood.

Robertson, the 2021 English Open champion, was downed 4-2 by the much-improved Sanderson Lam.

Murphy and Wilson, meanwhile, fell in deciding-frame defeats to Liu Hongyu and Oliver Lines respectively.

Several other top seeds managed to make it through their held over qualifying-round fixtures, however.

Former champions Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump coasted into the last 64 with whitewash wins against Andrew Pagett and Sean O’Sullivan.

Mark Allen produced the performance of the day by compiling a fantastic four century breaks in a row against Mostafa Dorgham.

It was tougher for world champion Luca Brecel and Scottish legend John Higgins, with the pair eventually emerging from respective 4-3 thrillers with Stan Moody and Marco Fu.

Ding Junhui, Jack Lisowski, and this season’s European Masters champion Barry Hawkins were among the others to reach the next round.

Elsewhere, Ricky Walden, Yuan Sijun, and Matthew Selt became the first players through to the last 32 of the competition.

The English Open boasts a top prize of £80,000 and is the third event of eight on the BetVictor European Series.
