Next up on the schedule for this week’s batch of snooker qualifiers is the preliminary phase for the Welsh Open.
The fourth and final Home Nations tournament of the 2023/24 campaign will take place at the Venue Cymru in February.
As usual with events from this series, the top 16 seeds have all had their initial round-of-128 fixtures held over to the Llandudno venue.
That includes reigning Welsh Open champion Robert Milkins, record five-time champion John Higgins, and home favourite Mark Williams.
Ronnie O’Sullivan is currently in the draw and is due to face Liam Graham in his held-over tie next month.
The Rocket, however, has indicated that the Welsh Open may be one of the upcoming events that he opts to skip as his focus continues to be directed at the more lucrative prizes.
The remaining competitors from outside the top 16 will battle it over the next few days at the Barnsley Metrodome in an attempt to qualify.
The Welsh Open could prove to be an important event on this season’s calendar for a number of reasons.
It will be the last opportunity to earn ranking points that will count towards qualification to the Players Championship.
Additionally, it marks the conclusion of the European Series in which the highest earner after eight counting events will receive a bonus worth £150,000.
That being said, with a huge lead Judd Trump may already have that jackpot prize in the bag before Wales, depending on how results go in the penultimate counting event – next week’s German Masters.
