World Open final: Judd Trump vs Ding Junhui

The 2024 World Open final will be contested between Judd Trump and Ding Junhui on Sunday at the Yushan Sport Centre.

The pair emerged from contrasting semi-final encounters on Saturday to set up a mouthwatering showdown for the £170,000 top prize.

Trump continued his defence of the tournament with a 6-2 triumph over Jackson Page, while Ding edged Neil Robertson in a 6-5 thriller.

The second game had just about everything – from big breaks to unexpected misses under the pressure amid twists and turns in the scoreline.

Eventually it was a visibly exhausted Ding who held his nerve the most, China’s superstar having to be escorted out of the arena by security as a result of the frenzied atmosphere in his home country.

The loss for Robertson, who led 5-4 and had golden opportunities in the last two frames to progress, means he will be forced into the World Championship qualifiers next month.

Sunday’s World Open final, meanwhile, promises to be another spectacular occasion with Ding bidding for a first ranking title in more than four years.

The 36 year-old will certainly have a legion of fans on his side, but there’s no doubting the fact that he will be the underdog.

Trump may not have produced at his very best this week but has the consistency of a prolific champion to fall back on.

The Englishman will compete in an eighth final of this term and victory would take his tally of ranking titles since last October to five.

While Trump is looking to match Steve Davis’ career total of 28 ranking titles, Ding is desperately hoping to finally add to his 14.

The former world number one has been stuck on that number since winning the UK Championship all the way back in 2019.

It has been an unusual barren streak for someone of Ding’s pedigree, but success here would be a timely boost ahead of what’s to shortly come at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

Trump and Ding share an even head-to-head record with nine triumphs apiece from their 18 prior battles in all competitions.

They have previously clashed in one full ranking event final, the German Masters title-deciding encounter in 2014 that Ding won 9-5.

Whether or not Ding will be feeling any aftereffects of the tiring duel with Robertson that concluded just shy of midnight local time remains to be seen.

Trump, by contrast, should be fresh after a relatively straightforward passage from his penultimate outing in Yushan.

Much will depend on how the opening session of the best-of-19 affair will play out, with both players vying for that quick start to gain the important early initiative.
