Kyren Wilson beats Judd Trump and wins Xi’an Grand Prix title

Kyren Wilson emerged as the inaugural champion of the Xi’an Grand Prix after completing a 10-8 victory over Judd Trump in Sunday’s final.

Played in a region of China famed for the Terracotta Army, the player known as the Warrior battled past the new world number one to claim the £177,000 top prize.

Success for Wilson marks his first as a world champion and takes his career tally of ranking crowns to seven.

The 32 year-old, who also beat Ronnie O’Sullivan in the semi-finals, is playing with every bit of confidence that comes with conquering the Crucible.

A topsy-turvy final saw both players enjoy moments in the ascendancy, and there was never more than a frame in it until the very end.

Trump, undefeated this season heading into the title-deciding affair, lost the opening frame but won three of next four to lead 3-2.

Breaks of 135 and 75 brought Wilson back in front, and the Kettering cueist duly orchestrated a 5-4 lead at the end of the first session by winning a dramatic ninth frame.

Momentum was difficult to come by right through the match, but Trump at times appeared like he was shifting through the gears during the evening’s play.

The 35 year-old, the winner of last month’s Shanghai Masters in China, won four out of the next six frames with breaks of 104, 66, and 53 to lead 8-7.

Wilson, however, dug deep as the great champions tend to do and subsequently reeled off the last three frames for glory.

Consolation for Trump will be ending the tournament as the new world number one.

The £76,000 runner-up cheque takes his rolling two-year tally to the same as Mark Allen’s, but Trump moves in front of the Northern Irishman on countback.

Wilson is not far behind the duo, and his next target will surely be achieving that coveted number one status for the first time.

The mega Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters follows the Xi’an Grand Prix at the end of the month, with the massive riches on offer potentially leading to further moves in the rankings.

Kyren Wilson is certainly well poised to take advantage as he establishes himself as a more consistent and prolific winner on the circuit.
