Jimmy White was among the winners on Tuesday as the remaining results at the 2025 Wuhan Open qualifiers were determined in Leicester.
The 63 year-old, beginning his 46th consecutive campaign as a professional player courtesy of a renewed invitational tour card, was in fine form at the Mattioli Arena.
Indeed, White produced one of his best performances of recent times to beat Anthony McGill 5-2 with breaks of 92, 90, 80, and 71.
The latter has struggled for form and consistency over the last few years and is, in fact, already in the midst of the tour survival battle on the provisional end-of-season rankings.
For White, though, the former world number two will head to China in late-August for the lucrative ranking event where he’ll do battle with old rival Marco Fu.
Fu’s progress was arguably even more impressive, with the veteran Hong Kong potter rolling back the years with a hat-trick of century breaks to oust top-16 competitor Chris Wakelin.
There were no issues for Kyren Wilson, who launched his new season with a resounding 5-0 success over rookie Connor Benzey.
Barry Hawkins, Ryan Day, David Gilbert, Lei Peifan, and Jak Jones were among the other familiar names to make it through the preliminary phase unscathed.
There were a few upsets of sorts, however, with former world champion Stuart Bingham bowing out to returning pro Liam Highfield – this year’s European amateur champion.
Robert Milkins also exited the fray with a 5-1 reverse to Wang Yuchen, although whether or not that now legislates as a shock is debatable considering the former’s recent form.
Jimmy Robertson, Jackson Page, and Xu Si all advanced, while Ben Woollaston thumped Ken Doherty with a 5-1 scoreline.
The final results bring an end to three days of action at the Wuhan Open qualifiers, with several top seeds having had their round-of-128 fixtures held over to the venue stages.
The main event in Wuhan, where Xiao Guodong is the defending champion, will take place from August 24th to August 30th this summer.
Next up on the calendar are the British Open qualifiers, which also take place at the Mattioli Arena over the next four days.
