Judd Trump emerged triumphantly at the 2026 Shanghai Masters after beating Kyren Wilson 11-6 at the Luwan Gymnasium on Sunday.
In an all-English showdown for glory, the world number one denied the defending champion to pocket the lucrative £210,000 top prize.
The Shanghai Masters isn’t classified as a ranking event, but it is regarded as one of the most prestigious invitational tournaments on the calendar.
Trump prevailed from a somewhat cagey affair, with each player generally failing to reproduce the heavier scoring from earlier in the event.
The duo combined to compile a dozen century breaks after they entered the fray in the last 16.
Yet the highest break of a lengthy opening session was just 82, which Trump made in the concluding frame to establish a commanding 7-3 advantage.
Wilson had taken an early lead by winning the very first frame, but when he lost the following three to trail 3-1 at the mid-session interval, he was always playing catch-up.
The 2024 world champion lost an important sixth frame on the black with Trump later taking the last three frames of the afternoon’s play to orchestrate a four-frame cushion.
That then became 8-3 when Trump began the second session by winning the 11th frame on the pink.
Wilson, who fought back from behind in all three of his previous victories in the competition, finally showed some form by subsequently compiling the final’s first century break.
The Warrior also pinched the next after pouncing on a poor safety from his opponent, who despite the large lead was starting to look a bit rattled.
Trump really should have lost the frame before the last mid-session interval as well, only for Wilson to snooker himself on what would have been a frame-clinching brown.
Another black-ball steal restored Trump’s four-frame buffer and halted any momentum that his opponent was building.
The theme of the entire game continued when they returned from the break with Trump coming from behind to pinch the 15th frame on the pink.
To Wilson’s credit, the Kettering cueist continued to fight gallantly and scored the final’s second century break with a terrific 134 contribution.
But any thoughts of a dramatic turnaround were put to bed with Trump, albeit needing a couple of bites at the cherry, eventually sealing his 11-6 triumph.
Victory for the Bristol man adds to his prior success at the Shanghai Masters in 2024.
It also avenges a hat-trick of defeats to Wilson the last three times they had encountered each other in big finals.
Wilson had pipped Trump to the title at the 2024 Xi’an Grand Prix, the Northern Ireland Open of the same year, and the 2025 Players Championship.
Trump, however, was generally in control on this occasion and will surely take great confidence into the remainder of the fledgling 2026/27 snooker campaign.
The 36 year-old endured a difficult time by his lofty standards last term, collecting just one piece of silverware, losing numerous finals, and suffering from persistent cue issues.
But winning his opening tournament of the new campaign will undoubtedly provide him with great satisfaction and impetus moving forward.
Next up for both Trump and Wilson will be another important tournament, with the China Open returning to the schedule for the first time since 2019.
The rich ranking event in Taiyuan, where there will be a champion’s cheque worth £250,000, commences on Saturday.
