Chang Bingyu captured his maiden ranking title with a 10-7 triumph over Zhao Xintong in the final of the 2026 Wuhan Open on Saturday.
In an all-Chinese showdown at the Optics Valley Gymnasium, Chang ultimately prevailed from a cagey encounter where neither was able to play anywhere near to their potential.
Zhao was hoping to end the week on a high note having guaranteed his ascension to the number one position in the world rankings.
But the Cyclone was way below his best in a disappointing outing, and Chang was able to hold his nerve at the end to get over the winning line.
Zhao actually began the title-deciding affair the stronger, making a break of 76 in the opening frame before doubling his advantage.
But Chang, chasing a maiden ranking title after suffering defeat in the final of last year’s Scottish Open, responded by winning the following two.
It was a similar story after the mid-session interval, with Zhao twice again creeping in front only for his younger opponent to tie the game up.
There was duly a nervy final frame of the opening session with both players desperate to steal an advantage heading into the later bout of play.
Each player had opportunities, but it was Chang who edged it on the colours to force his way into the lead for the first time.
Buoyed by his advantage, the 24 year-old then forged further clear with breaks of 62 and 57 at the beginning of the second session.
At this point, it was looking grim for Zhao who was producing a surprisingly sub-par display despite his 100 per cent record in finals heading into the affair.
But the momentum of the final swung again in a dramatic 12th frame with Chang missing a black to move four clear, and Zhao pinching it to instead stay just two adrift.
The 2025 world snooker champion subsequently won both frames either side of the last mid-session interval to restore parity at 7-7.
Clearly in the ascendancy, Zhao appeared set to move back in front but showed frustration as he broke down when in the balls, allowing Chang in to stop the rot with a run of 73.
With Zhao squandering more chances, former IBSF world amateur champion Chang won the next on the pink ball to move to within the brink of glory.
He needed a snooker in the following frame but got the penalty points required before compiling an extraordinary clearance from the last red to clinch the triumph.
While Chang might not have produced the kind of level that many have come to expect from him across the last year or so, he was still thoroughly deserving of a first piece of silverware on the World Snooker Tour.
He wasn’t able to add to his season-leading tally of 19 century breaks, but as in his victories over Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan earlier in the event, Chang proved that he is adept in the tactical department as well.
The £175,000 champion’s cheque will see him rise to a career-high ranking of 22, and it’s only a matter of time before he joins the top 16.
Chang has no ranking points to defend between now and the end of the season, making further leaps up the standings likely.
Already all but guaranteed a spot in all three Players Series events, Chang will also be invited to the Champion of Champions for the first time.
Automatic seeding at the Crucible seems probable too, while a long-term rivalry with Zhao could be on the cards given their respective ages.
They were each embroiled in the betting and match-fixing scandal that rocked the sport a few years ago, but they quickly fought their way back to the top of the sport.
Both players won’t have long to wait before the next event with the 2026 British Open commencing on Monday in Cheltenham.
