How the last 16 looks in the 2026 Shenzhen Open draw

The field in the 2026 Shenzhen Open draw is quickly getting whittled down with 16 to become eight on Thursday in China.

There is an interesting mix of top seeds, lower-ranked players, experienced competitors, and young pretenders still vying for the £177,000 top prize.

Seven members from the current crop of top 16 remain in the hunt for glory and the 2026/27 snooker season’s sixth ranking title.

Among them, only Mark Selby has previously triumphed at a ranking tournament this campaign, although Judd Trump won the invitational Shanghai Masters.

Both Englishmen are regarded as the obvious favourites in the outright betting market, and they could meet each other as soon as the next round.

Indeed, the bottom half of the draw looks particularly stacked even though a number of high-profile contenders have already fallen by the wayside.

China Open champion Selby, who has arguably been the player of the season so far, encounters seven-time ranking event winner Stephen Maguire.

The winner will face either Trump or Si Jiahui, the latter so far making the most of his top 16 seeding status for this event even though he has dropped outside the elite bracket of the rankings since the seedings were assigned in July.

Also in the bottom half lie Wu Yize and Shaun Murphy, who could set up a repeat of their epic World Snooker Championship final from May if they can safely overcome their upcoming hurdles.

Murphy takes on a player in Elliot Slessor who many believe to be high up on the list of potential first-time ranking event winners this term.

Wu faces a resurgent Ricky Walden after the three-time ranking event winner backed up his 5-4 defeat of home favourite Ding Junhui with another deciding-frame clincher against recent English Open champion Ali Carter.

The top half, meanwhile, features the likes of Neil Robertson and Kyren Wilson.

Whatever happens for the rest of this week, Robertson can’t quite catch Zhao Xintong at the top of the rankings.

But collecting the champion’s cheque on Sunday would equate to the Australian drawing to within less than £1,000 of the Cyclone on the official two-year list.

Robertson next faces Chris Wakelin, who has been one of the players of the tournament so far with heavy scoring leading to standout successes over Liam Davies and Stuart Bingham.

The winner of that tie will face either Jimmy Robertson or Scott Donaldson, each with a rare opportunity to reach the business end of a big tournament.

Elsewhere, Wilson will hope to continue his ranking revival when he plays Michael Holt for a spot in the last eight.

The Kettering cueist is officially still ranked in the top ten but has a lot of points to defend between now and the end of the season.

The other fixture from the round of 16 sees Yuan Sijun – one of only three Chinese left in the 2026 Shenzhen Open draw – in action against Zak Surety.

The last-16 matches on Thursday will take place at 07:00am and 12:30pm BST.
