David Gray’s Snooker Career

David Gray turned professional in 1996 after winning the English Amateur Championship the previous year, having earlier finished runner-up at the IBSF World Amateur Championship in 1994. He quickly established himself as a talented young player with strong break-building ability.

Gray made steady progress through the professional ranks during the late 1990s, collecting additional early silverware with victories at the Merseyside Professional Championship in 1996 and the Benson & Hedges Championship in 1998. By the early 2000s, he had broken into the sport’s upper tier.

He reached the final of the Scottish Open in 2002 and returned a year later to secure the biggest victory of his career. At the 2003 Scottish Open, Gray defeated Mark Selby in the final to claim his maiden and only ranking title, lifting him into the world’s top 16.

Gray enjoyed his most successful period at the Triple Crown events in 2004. He reached the final of the UK Championship where he was heavily beaten 10–1 by Stephen Maguire, and he also progressed to the quarter-finals of the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre.

Despite those achievements, Gray struggled to maintain consistency as snooker entered a new era. His form declined during the latter part of the decade, and he dropped off the professional tour in 2010 at just 31 years of age, bringing an abrupt end to a career that had once shown considerable promise.
