Gary Wilson’s Snooker Career
Gary Wilson first turned professional in 2004 after success at the IBSF World Under-21 Championship. His initial spell on the Main Tour was short-lived, and after being relegated in 2006 it took him several years to earn another opportunity at the elite level.
Wilson returned to the professional ranks in 2013, building momentum through strong performances in the PTC circuit. With more experience and confidence, the former taxi driver began to rise steadily up the rankings and establish himself as a regular threat in ranking events.
By 2015, he had pushed towards the top 32 after a notable run to the final of the China Open, signalling that he had the game to compete with the sport’s leading players. Although his form fluctuated for several seasons, Wilson produced major highs, including reaching the semi-finals of the World Championship in 2019 and the final of the British Open in 2021.
He has also spoken openly about battling depression, and there were periods where results and confidence dipped significantly. Wilson’s career trajectory then changed dramatically at the 2022 Scottish Open.
After arriving with limited expectations, a standout victory over reigning world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan helped ignite a run that gathered momentum through the week. Further wins over Kyren Wilson and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh carried him into the final, where he produced a dominant performance to defeat Joe O’Connor 9-2 and claim his first ranking title.
Twelve months later, Wilson successfully defended his Scottish Open crown, confirming his ability to deliver on the big stage. He then added a third ranking title at the 2024 Welsh Open to cap the most successful period of his career.
