Summary

At the age of just 14, Yan Bingtao won the IBSF World Amateur Championship in 2014.

The triumph meant he was eligible to compete on the Main Tour, but the youngster didn’t officially take up his professional status until the 2016/2017 season.

In the meantime, however, Yan partnered fellow teenager Zhou Yuelong to represent China in the 2015 World Cup.

The pair sensationally reached the final and upset Scottish duo John Higgins and Stephen Maguire to land the title in Wuxi.

After commencing his professional career in 2016, Yan didn’t take long to establish himself as a player with a bright future.

MORE PLAYER PROFILES:

A year later and still just 17, Yan came within a frame of becoming the youngest ever ranking event winner when he lost 9-8 to Mark Williams in the final of the Northern Ireland Open in Belfast.

In 2019, Yan triumphed at the Riga Masters to become the first teenage ranking event winner since compatriot Ding Junhui a dozen years previously.

The success helped him force his way into the top 16 in the world rankings and with it a berth in the Masters for the first time in 2021.

In a tournament held behind closed doors as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Yan won three deciding-frame thrillers in a row to reach the final, where he beat Higgins 10-8 to capture his first Triple Crown title.

Possessing an all-round game that has been compared to the likes of Higgins and Mark Selby, Yan was widely tipped as a future world champion.

However, in 2023 he was found guilty after being charged with match-fixing offences and was handed a ban from the sport professionally until 2027.
