Michael White’s Snooker Career

Michael White was already attracting attention before turning professional in 2007. As an amateur, he won the IBSF World Amateur Championship at the age of 14 in 2006 and later added the European Under-19 title to his early achievements.

His talent was clear, but his early years on the Main Tour were difficult as he tried to establish himself while still a teenager. It was not until the 2013 World Championship that he truly announced himself to a wider audience. White came through qualifying to reach the Crucible Theatre and produced a memorable run to the quarter-finals, defeating Mark Williams and Dechawat Poomjaeng along the way.

The breakthrough helped spark an improvement in results and White began to climb the rankings. In 2015, he won the Snooker Shoot Out, which at the time was staged as an invitational, before capturing his first ranking title a week later at the Indian Open with a 5-0 win over Ricky Walden in the final.

His progress continued as he rose to a career-high ranking of world number 15 in 2016. The following year, White secured a second ranking title with victory at the Paul Hunter Classic. However, his form later declined and appearances at the latter stages of events became rarer.

By 2020, he had slipped outside the top 64 and was relegated from the Main Tour. White spoke openly about battling depression and initially found it difficult to regain his place on the professional circuit.

In 2022, he became only the second amateur to qualify for the venue stages of the World Championship, a performance that helped earn him a fresh opportunity to compete as a professional. Yet his career then took another serious turn when he received a three-year prison sentence in 2024 for assault.
