Summary

After a brief one-year stint as a professional in the 1996/97 season, Holt reached the final of the European Under-19 Amateur Championship in 1997.

The Hitman rejoined the pro ranks in 1998 and carved out a decent, albeit somewhat disappointing, 25-season career on the main tour.

A talented break-builder when in good form, Holt established a reputation for inconsistency that prevented him from ever reaching the higher echelons.

It took Holt six seasons to break into the top 32 in the world rankings, and he failed to qualify for the World Championship until 2005.

Appearances at the latter stages of tournaments were rare as he failed to live up to his potential.

MORE PLAYER PROFILES:

It wasn’t until the 2013 Shanghai Masters that the Nottingham potter reached a ranking event semi-final for the first time.

By that point in his career, however, he had won a couple of notable tournaments on the calendar.

The introduction of the Players Tour Championship minor-ranking series presented lower-ranked players with more opportunities.

Holt took advantage with victories in successive years on the PTC schedule – sealing one in Prague by edging John Higgins and one in Sheffield with a defeat of Dominic Dale.

A full ranking title appeared to be out of his reach, especially after he narrowly missed out on silverware with reverses at the 2016 Riga Masters and 2019 Snooker Shoot Out finals.

But at the 2020 Shoot Out, Holt reached the title-deciding contest for a second time and lifted the trophy by overcoming Zhou Yuelong.

A dismal spell of form unfortunately followed, and he suffered relegation from the pro circuit at the end of the 2021/22 season.
