Ronnie O’Sullivan confirmed for 2026 World Seniors Snooker Championship

Ronnie O’Sullivan will make a surprise appearance at the 2026 World Seniors Snooker Championship in Sheffield this year.

The Rocket, who has been very selective with the events he participates in over the course of the last few seasons, will contest the prestigious seniors event for the first time in his career in May.

Indeed, O’Sullivan will be bidding for a brace of world titles in quick succession, with both the sport’s flagship World Championship and the subsequent seniors event being staged at the iconic Crucible Theatre.

O’Sullivan, who turned 50 in December, wouldn’t have been able to compete on the World Seniors Snooker Tour only for a recent change that permits anyone over the required age of 40 to enter.

Previously, those ranked inside the world’s top 64 on the official two-year snooker rankings were prohibited from playing in the seniors, but that restriction has been lifted.

It means that there is a star-studded lineup assembling for the 2026 edition of the World Seniors Snooker Championship.

In addition to seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, world number four Mark Williams and Stuart Bingham are set to be involved.

The field also features Ken Doherty, Reanne Evans, Matthew Stevens, and record four-time world seniors champion Jimmy White.

The defending champion will be Alfie Burden, who beat Aaron Canavan last May to capture glory in the tournament for the first time.

O’Sullivan, meanwhile, is likely to attract significant numbers both at the venue itself and on TV, with the tournament to be broadcast on 5 in the UK and Ireland.

The Rocket hasn’t been in especially good form this season, although he did produce moments of magic en route to reaching the final of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters in Jeddah.

Since then, his presence on the tour has been fleeting, and he has generally failed to reach the latter rounds of events even when he has competed.

But getting O’Sullivan on board is a major coup for the seniors circuit, and it promises to be a widely watched episode if and when he plays.

World Seniors Snooker Tour chairman Jason Francis said: “The most commercially valuable player the sport has ever seen will make his seniors debut at the Crucible in May in an attempt to add another world title to his CV — wow!”

“We’ve already sold more tickets than we did for the entire event last year, and Ronnie’s participation is set to drive even greater demand.”

Other notable players in the 2026 World Seniors Snooker Championship draw are Tony Drago, Robert Milkins, Peter Lines, Anthony Hamilton, Dominic Dale, and reigning Seniors British Open Champion Joe Perry.

Tickets are on sale now from £17.50, not including the booking fee, with the tournament running from May 6 to 10.

As reported last week, O’Sullivan and Williams will also participate in a mini tournament in April celebrating John Virgo who passed away aged 79 earlier this month.

The John Virgo Trophy, played under the 900 format and with John Higgins and Stephen Hendry in the four-man lineup as well, will take place at Goffs in Ireland in April.

That’s a turn up. Particularly if Ronnie turns up.

  2. I’d be surprised if Williams or O’Sullivan play if they go deep at the World Championship.

I’ve got my reservations about loosening the criteria on who can play. It distorts the competition having players in the top 16 participating.
