Jamie Clarke – ‘I feel like I’m starting my career again’

Jamie Clarke got his 2026 World Snooker Championship campaign off to a positive start by beating Haydon Pinhey 10-5 in the qualifiers on Wednesday.

The Welshman reached the second round of the preliminary competition with an assured performance, compiling breaks of 138 and 112 during a five-frame winning stretch that broke the back of the contest.

Clarke is participating in this year’s tournament as an amateur having received an invitation from the WPBSA through his triumphant displays on the Q Tour.

This time last year, the 31 year-old’s career looked to be in jeopardy when he suffered relegation from the professional circuit and subsequently didn’t attend Q School.

However, a break away from competing, coupled with the establishment of his own academy in Wales, has successfully recharged his batteries.

“I played well,” Clarke told the World Snooker Tour. “I think I’m playing more now than ever ironically.”

“I fell off the tour last year and didn’t really practice the last six months of the tour last season – I was setting up my academy in Llanelli.

“To be honest, I just needed a little sabbatical for a year. I was ten or 12 years on the tour, and I feel like it’s done me a world of good.

“I got a lot of clarity, and I’m ready to mix it with the big boys.”

Clarke, who had several near misses at amateur level as a youngster before finally turning pro in 2018, had a quiet start upon his return to the amateur scene last year.

But the former Welsh amateur champion then secured back-to-back event victories on the Q Tour and finished top of the rankings.

That earned him a fresh two-year pro tour card that begins from next season, and Clarke is intent on making the most of his next opportunity.

“The last year has been nice being away from the pressure and not even having to travel one mile from my home. But I’m ready to mix it again.”

“It has been such a roller-coaster year, and I’ve enjoyed the year off. But I know I’m in my prime and playing the best I ever have on the table.

“I just feel like I’m ready. I feel like I’m starting my career again. I’ve had ten years, more or less, on and off the tour.

“I’ve got a nice practice facility now and a great little community back home. I’ve got a fantastic wife and a great home life.

“For me now going forward, it’s about enjoying the game as much as I can, enjoying these situations as much as I can, and try to be as successful as I possibly can.”

Clarke, who reached the last 16 of the 2020 World Championship, will face Belgium’s Ben Mertens in the second round of qualifying.
