Mark Allen’s Snooker Career
After winning the European Amateur Championship at senior and junior level, in addition to lifting the IBSF World Amateur Championship trophy, Mark Allen turned professional in 2005. It took the Northern Irishman only three years to break into the top 16 of the world rankings, and in 2009 he reached the semi-finals of the World Championship. That Allen has rarely been able to get back to that stage at the Crucible since then has remained one of the sport’s biggest mysteries.
The Pistol has been a constant presence in the top 16, and at times he has stood up to the greats of the game. His ability to compete at the very top level on a consistent basis has been the one thing missing, but his overall record speaks for itself. After reaching a first ranking final at the UK Championship in 2011, Allen captured a maiden ranking glory a few months later with victory in the World Open. Several more ranking successes followed, including on home soil when he landed the Northern Ireland Open titles in both 2021 and 2022.
Two of Allen’s other great victories have occurred in prestigious invitational tournaments. At the 2018 Masters, he downed Ronnie O’Sullivan and John Higgins to reach the final, where he beat Kyren Wilson to etch his name onto the Paul Hunter Trophy. Just under three years later, Allen secured another standout success at the Champion of Champions when he outplayed Neil Robertson in the title decider.
While there were many who still felt that Allen had underachieved given the wealth of talent at his disposal, the Antrim man began to produce more consistent results in the second half of 2022. After being beaten in the British Open final, Allen successfully defended his Northern Ireland Open crown before adding a maiden UK Championship title to his CV at the Barbican Centre in York.
By subsequently adding the World Grand Prix to his 2022/23 tally, he won three ranking titles in a season for the first time in his career and then ended the 2023/24 campaign as the sport’s world no.1. More substantial wins followed, reinforcing his status as one of the leading competitors of his generation.
