Alfie Burden’s Snooker Career
Alfie Burden turned professional in 1994, having originally pursued a career as a professional footballer before a serious leg injury forced a change of direction. He entered the snooker tour as a teenager and spent the next decade-and-a-half competing primarily outside the sport’s elite tier.
Burden qualified for the World Snooker Championship in 1998, making his sole Crucible appearance. Although he never returned to the tournament, he remained a regular tour competitor for many seasons, producing sporadic quarter-final appearances in ranking events.
After losing his professional status in 2008, Burden rebuilt his career through the amateur circuit. His persistence was quickly rewarded in 2009 when he won the IBSF World Amateur Championship, a prestigious international title at the time that earned him a return to the Main Tour.
Over the following years, Burden continued to fulfill his role as a bit-part player on the main tour, establishing a reputation as a journeyman who rarely enjoyed spells inside the world’s top 50. By the end of the 2024/2025 season, Burden had been relegated again which appeared to signal the dying embers of his career.
What came next was completely unexpected, with Burden’s victory at the 2025 World Seniors Championship earning him an invitation to the lucrative Champion of Champions. Exceeding that was a remarkable subsequent run at the Snooker Shoot Out, where Burden produced his best snooker to claim a maiden ranking title.
The shock victory made him the oldest first-time ranking event winner in snooker history, achieved just minutes shy of his 49th birthday.
