Anthony Hamilton’s Snooker Career

Anthony Hamilton turned professional in 1991 and became one of snooker’s longest-serving players on the main tour. A talented scorer in his prime, the Nottingham-born player climbed the rankings quickly and established himself among the leading professionals during the mid-1990s.

He won several non-ranking titles in 1994 and 1995, including events on the Strachan Challenge series and tournaments in Australia, but the strength of the era made it difficult for him to convert his ability into regular contention for the biggest ranking prizes.

Hamilton made a number of notable runs at ranking events and reached the World Championship quarter-finals on several occasions, but he often fell short at the latter stages. His first ranking final came at the 1999 British Open, where he lost 9-7 to Fergal O’Brien despite making a fast start that included two century breaks.

Three years later, Hamilton came even closer to a first ranking title at the 2002 China Open, only to lose 9-8 to Mark Williams after dropping the final four frames. As his time in the top 16 came to an end, he was increasingly labelled as one of the best players never to win a ranking event, a narrative that was reinforced by a narrow 4-3 defeat to Judd Trump in the 2010 Paul Hunter Classic final.

His long wait finally ended at the 2017 German Masters. After beating a series of leading players including Mark Williams, Mark Selby, Barry Hawkins and Stuart Bingham, Hamilton defeated Ali Carter in the final in Berlin to claim the only ranking trophy of his career at the age of 45.

In his later years, Hamilton battled a number of injuries but continued to compete into his fourth decade as a professional. He retired from the main tour after the 2024/25 season and moved into coaching.
