Anthony McGill’s Snooker Career

Anthony McGill turned professional in 2010 following a strong amateur career that included two runner-up finishes at the European Under-19 Championship. He made early progress on the professional circuit and reached the final of the minor-ranking Scottish Open in 2012, but it was not until several years later that he began to attract wider attention.

McGill announced himself on the biggest stage at the 2015 World Championship, where he defeated defending champion Mark Selby on his way to the quarter-finals at the Crucible. A year later, he captured his first ranking title at the 2016 Indian Open with a 5-2 victory over Kyren Wilson in the final.

McGill added a second ranking event success in 2017 by winning the Snooker Shoot Out, briefly appearing poised to establish himself as a regular member of the top 16. However, sustained consistency proved difficult to maintain, and periods of struggle followed as his ranking fluctuated.

Despite this, McGill repeatedly saved his best form for the World Championship. In 2020, he reached the semi-finals at the Crucible, losing a dramatic deciding-frame match to Kyren Wilson after coming within a frame of the final.

He followed that run with another quarter-final appearance in 2021, reinforcing his reputation as a dangerous opponent in Sheffield. After briefly flirting with the dangers of tour survival, McGill strengthen his position in the rankings again with a run to the final of the 2025 British Open.
