Barry Hawkins’ Snooker Career
Barry Hawkins has been an ever-present on the professional circuit since the late 1990s, but it took time for him to establish himself among the game’s elite. His early years were marked by underachievement, highlighted by a modest World Championship record that included five consecutive first-round defeats at the Crucible Theatre.
Hawkins’ career trajectory changed significantly following the expansion of the tour around 2010, when increased playing opportunities allowed him to build confidence and consistency at the highest level. Success arrived in 2012 when he won the Snooker Shoot Out, a result that paved the way for his first ranking title later that year at the Australian Open.
Not long after that, Hawkins reached the 2013 World Championship final in Sheffield, pushing Ronnie O’Sullivan before finishing runner-up at the Crucible. Over the next five editions of the World Championship, he returned to the semi-finals on four occasions, underlining his reputation as one of the game’s most reliable performers on snooker’s biggest stage.
Further ranking success followed with victories at the 2014 PTC Grand Finals and the 2017 World Grand Prix, while he also reached the final of the Masters, once again losing out to O’Sullivan.
With a career-high ranking of number four, Hawkins became widely regarded as one of the toughest opponents outside the sport’s very top tier. In 2023, he ended a six-year wait for another ranking title by emerging victoriously at the European Masters, a year after finishing runner-up in the same event.
By finishing runner-up at the 2025 UK Championship to Judd Trump, Hawkins took on the unwanted mantle of being the only player to have lost in all three Triple Crown finals without having ever etched his name onto one of the trophies from the prestigious series.
