Bob Chaperon’s Snooker Career
Bob Chaperon turned professional in 1984 and competed on the Main Tour during an era dominated by some of snooker’s most established names. Although he never became a consistent presence inside the sport’s upper rankings, he remained a competitive professional capable of occasional deep runs.
His most notable ranking event performance prior to his breakthrough came at the 1987 Grand Prix, where he reached the quarter-finals. Chaperon also qualified for the World Snooker Championship on three occasions, gaining experience at the Crucible Theatre despite limited success at the venue.
Chaperon’s career-defining moment arrived at the 1990 British Open. Entering the event as a heavy outsider, he produced a series of disciplined performances and went on to defeat Alex Higgins in the final, securing his maiden and only ranking title in one of the competition’s biggest upsets.
Later that same year, Chaperon represented Canada in the World Cup and played a key role alongside Cliff Thorburn and Alain Robidoux as the team claimed the title, marking a significant achievement for Canadian snooker.
Outside of that peak period, Chaperon struggled to establish sustained momentum on the professional tour. He moved on and off the circuit either side of the turn of the millennium and eventually dropped off the tour for the final time in 2003.
Following his professional career, Chaperon remained active in the amateur game. In 2019, he won the Canadian Amateur Championship for a second time, 38 years after his first triumph, underlining his enduring involvement in the sport.
