Eddie Charlton’s Snooker Career

Eddie Charlton turned professional in 1963 and went on to become one of the most enduring figures in professional snooker history. Nicknamed “Steady Eddie” for his measured style and tactical discipline, he competed at the highest level across more than three decades.

Charlton contested the final of the World Snooker Championship on three occasions, finishing runner-up in 1968, 1973, and 1975. Although only the 1975 edition counted as a ranking event final under later classifications, his repeated presence at the sport’s most prestigious event established him as one of the leading players of his era.

He was also a regular contender at invitational events. Charlton won the Pot Black tournament three times – in 1972, 1973, and 1980 – and captured the World Professional Matchplay Championship in 1976. Additional victories at international events such as the Limosin International and the Kronenbrau 1308 Classic further underlined his consistency.

Charlton enjoyed sustained success well into his later years. Remarkably, he qualified for the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre in 1992 at the age of 62, one of the oldest players ever to do so. He continued competing professionally until his retirement in 1995.

Away from the global tour, Charlton dominated the domestic game in Australia, winning the Australian Professional Championship a record 14 times. His longevity, professionalism, and influence helped to establish Australia as a recognised presence in international snooker. He passed away in 2004.
