Jimmy Robertson’s Snooker Career
Jimmy Robertson first turned professional in 2002, but he did not immediately establish himself on the Main Tour, dropping off the circuit after just one season during each of his first two spells.
His third attempt proved more successful. After seven years of fluctuating fortunes, Robertson enjoyed a strong spell in the amateur ranks and was the top English amateur in 2009, winning the English Amateur Championship and setting the platform for a more stable return to the professional circuit.
The expanding calendar in the early years of the Barry Hearn era provided more opportunities for lower-ranked players, and Robertson quickly climbed into the top 64. However, his progress then stalled as inconsistent form prevented him from regularly challenging at the business end of ranking events.
A gifted break-builder when in rhythm, he was prone to errors and struggled for consistency, particularly when given the opportunity to play on television. That context made his run to the title at the 2018 European Masters particularly unexpected.
Arriving in Belgium with only one ranking quarter-final on his record, Robertson produced an outstanding week of snooker to claim his first ranking title. He won his opening four matches in deciding frames, then defeated Mark Allen and Mark King to reach the final. After racing into a 5-0 lead against Joe Perry, Robertson maintained his advantage to win 9-6 and secure a maiden ranking event victory.
Robertson rose to a career-high ranking of world number 21 in 2019, but his form soon declined, and he later required a deciding-frame World Championship qualifying victory in 2021 to safeguard his tour status.
