John Virgo’s Snooker Career
John Virgo turned professional in 1976 and quickly became a competitive presence during snooker’s early television era. He emerged as a solid all-round player capable of deep runs at major events, reaching four ranking event semi-finals across his career.
Virgo’s most significant achievement came in 1979 when he won the UK Championship, defeating Terry Griffiths in the final. At the time, the tournament was staged as a non-ranking invitational event and was not yet open to international players, but it already carried major prestige within the sport.
Unusually, Virgo’s crowning moment went largely unseen by television audiences. Although the event was being broadcast by the BBC, a strike coincided with the final frames of the championship match, meaning his victory was never fully televised.
That same period marked the peak of Virgo’s professional career. He reached the semi-finals of the World Snooker Championship in 1979 and climbed as high as world number 10. While further major titles proved elusive, he remained a regular presence at invitational events, qualifying for the Masters on six occasions.
Virgo retired from professional snooker in 1994. He later became one of the sport’s most familiar figures away from the table, enjoying widespread popularity as the host of the BBC game show Big Break and as a long-standing commentator on BBC snooker coverage.
Virgo passed away in 2026 at the age of 79, shortly after commentating on that year’s Masters final.
