Martin Gould’s Snooker Career

A two-time English amateur champion, Martin Gould was a regular competitor on the main tour for two decades from the mid-2000s. Nicknamed the Pinner Potter, he did not immediately fulfill his early promise in his first years as a professional, but his results improved significantly during the early stages of the Barry Hearn era.

Gould qualified for the World Championship in 2010 and came close to reaching the quarter-finals, only to lose 13-12 to Neil Robertson in the last 16 after leading 11-5. Despite the disappointment, he built on the experience with a series of strong performances during the 2010/11 season.

Consistency in the Players Tour Championship series helped him reach his first final at the 2011 PTC Grand Finals in Dublin, where he lost 4-0 to Shaun Murphy. A first professional title followed in the 2012/13 season when Gould won PTC Event 2, and these results helped him break into the top 16 for the first time.

Gould reached a career-high world ranking of number 11 in 2012 and continued to feature regularly in the latter stages of events over the next few seasons. Invitational success also came in the Snooker Shoot Out and the Championship League in 2013.

He remained without a ranking title for several years, coming close at the 2015 Australian Open where he lost a tight final to John Higgins. Later in the 2015/16 season, Gould produced some of the best snooker of his career to reach the final of the German Masters, where he defeated Luca Brecel to secure his maiden ranking crown.

Gould later struggled for consistency, though he did reach another ranking final at the 2020 European Masters where he was beaten 9-8 by Mark Selby. In 2025, he dropped off the main tour after battling with a series of health issues.
