Mike Hallett’s Snooker Career
Mike Hallett turned professional in 1980 and gradually established himself as a regular presence on the professional circuit during a highly competitive era of snooker. He reached his peak during the second half of the 1980s, becoming a consistent contender at major events and breaking into the world’s top 10.
Hallett reached his first ranking event final at the 1988 British Open, where he was defeated by a rising Stephen Hendry. The result marked his arrival at the top level and was followed by a series of strong performances that kept him among the sport’s leading players.
His best World Championship performances came in the late 1980s, when he reached the quarter-finals on two occasions. Although he never progressed beyond that stage at the Crucible Theatre, those runs confirmed his ability to compete consistently at snooker’s most demanding event.
Hallett was twice a finalist at the Masters, producing two of the tournament’s most memorable finals for contrasting reasons. In 1988, he was comprehensively defeated 9–0 by Steve Davis, while in 1991 he suffered a dramatic collapse after leading Stephen Hendry 8–2, ultimately losing 9–8 in one of the competition’s most famous comebacks.
His sole ranking title arrived at the 1989 Hong Kong Open, where he secured the biggest victory of his professional career. Alongside that success, Hallett also collected numerous non-ranking titles – including the 1991 Scottish Masters – reflecting his competitiveness during the era.
Hallett, who teamed up with Hendry for several successes under the doubles format, suffered a decline in the 1990s and fell off the main tour for the last time in 2005.
