Neal Foulds’ Snooker Career
Neal Foulds turned professional in 1983, a year after winning the British Under-19 Amateur Championship with a victory over John Parrott in the final. He quickly adapted to the professional ranks and established himself as a regular top-16 player.
Son of former professional player Geoff Foulds, his breakthrough campaign came during the 1986/87 season. Foulds captured the only ranking title of his career at the International Open, defeating Cliff Thorburn in the final. He also reached the finals of both the UK Championship and the British Open, losing to Steve Davis and Jimmy White respectively.
Those results, combined with a run to the semi-finals of the 1987 World Championship at the Crucible Theatre, helped him climb to a career-high ranking of world number three. At his peak, Foulds was regarded as one of the leading players outside the dominant Davis era.
In addition to his ranking success, he enjoyed a strong record in invitational competition. Foulds won the Pontins Professional twice, captured the Pot Black title in 1992, and added the prestigious Scottish Masters crown later that same year. He was also a member of the England teams that won the World Cup in 1988 and 1989.
His form declined during the mid-1990s, and he gradually slipped down the rankings before retiring from professional competition in 2003. Since then, Foulds has become widely respected for his commentary and punditry work across several major snooker broadcasters.
