Peter Ebdon’s Snooker Career
Peter Ebdon turned professional in 1991 a year after winning the IBSF World Under-21 Championship, and he quickly established himself as one of the most determined competitors of his generation. His breakthrough arrived in 1993 when he captured the Grand Prix title, one of the most prestigious ranking events of the era.
By the mid-1990s, Ebdon had cemented his place among the world’s elite, reaching the finals of both the UK Championship and the World Championship during the 1995/96 season. Although he was denied silverware on both occasions by Stephen Hendry, those defeats proved formative rather than defining.
Ebdon gained revenge in emphatic fashion at the Crucible Theatre in 2002, producing a remarkable performance to defeat Hendry in a dramatic World Championship final. Four years later, he repeated the feat at the UK Championship, again overcoming the seven-time world champion to secure his second Triple Crown title.
Nicknamed “The Force”, Ebdon was known for his heavy scoring when in form and his exceptional mental strength under pressure. Across his career, he won nine ranking titles and twice reached a career-high world ranking of number three, spending the majority of the period between 1996 and 2009 inside the top eight.
Ebdon enjoyed a late-career resurgence in 2018 when he reached the final of the Paul Hunter Classic, but persistent neck problems forced his retirement from professional competition in 2020, and he later became a snooker coach.
