Ryan Day’s Snooker Career
Ryan Day first appeared on the wider snooker radar in 1998 when, as a teenager, he won the Welsh Amateur Championship and finished runner-up in the IBSF World Amateur Championship. He turned professional the following year, but it would take time before he established himself on the Main Tour.
That breakthrough arrived in 2007 when Day reached the finals of two ranking events, first at the Malta Cup and later at the Shanghai Masters. He was denied silverware on both occasions by Shaun Murphy and Dominic Dale respectively, and a year later he suffered another narrow defeat in the 2008 Grand Prix final against John Higgins.
As the seasons passed, Day developed a reputation as one of the game’s most dangerous nearly men. Between 2008 and 2012, he reached the quarter-finals of the World Championship on three occasions and climbed to a career-high ranking of number six.
Despite remaining a feared opponent with fluent attacking ability, tournament victories continued to prove elusive. After several seasons hovering just outside the top 16, Day returned to a ranking final at the 2017 World Grand Prix where he was again beaten, this time by Barry Hawkins.
The turning point came during the 2017/18 campaign. At the season-opening Riga Masters, Day claimed his long-awaited first ranking title with victory over Stephen Maguire. He followed that success with wins at the Gibraltar Open and the invitational Romanian Masters later in the season.
Further ranking success arrived with triumphs at the 2021 Snooker Shoot Out and the 2022 British Open, ensuring his place among the most successful Welsh players of the modern era.
