Tony Knowles’ Snooker Career
Tony Knowles turned professional in 1980 at a time when snooker was entering its first major period of widespread popularity. The Bolton-born cueist quickly became one of the sport’s most recognisable figures, combining natural ability with a high-profile presence away from the table.
He announced himself on the biggest stage at the 1982 World Championship, producing one of the most famous results in Crucible history by thrashing defending champion Steve Davis 10-1 in the opening round. Later that year, Knowles captured the International Open, becoming the first player to win a ranking event outside the World Championship.
A second ranking title followed in 1983 at the Professional Players Tournament, and Knowles appeared well placed to challenge Davis’ growing dominance. In 1984, he climbed to a career-high world ranking of number two, firmly establishing himself among the game’s leading contenders.
Despite that promise, further major success proved elusive. Knowles suffered three World Championship semi-final defeats, losing 16-15 to Cliff Thorburn in 1983 and later falling to eventual champions Dennis Taylor in 1985 and Joe Johnson in 1986.
He remained inside the top 16 until 1990 and enjoyed a brief resurgence in the early 1990s, reaching the final of the 1991 Dubai Classic. However, his time at the highest level gradually came to an end, and he eventually lost his professional status in 2001.
Knowles has remained closely connected to the sport, continuing to compete sporadically at senior and amateur level, including appearances at Q School.
