Willie Thorne’s Snooker Career
Willie Thorne turned professional in 1975 and quickly established himself as one of the most naturally gifted players of his generation. By the late 1970s, he was already ranked inside the world’s top 20, and throughout the 1980s he became a familiar and popular figure during snooker’s boom years.
Renowned for his confidence and prolific break-building in practice, Thorne earned the nickname “Mr Maximum.” He compiled the fourth ever televised competitive maximum break at the 1987 UK Championship, underlining his reputation as one of the game’s most fluent cueists.
His finest competitive year came in 1985, when he claimed his first and only ranking title at the Classic. Later that year, Thorne reached the final of the UK Championship and appeared on course for a career-defining victory when he led world number one Steve Davis 13-8. However, a missed blue proved costly, and Davis recovered to win 16-14 in one of the most dramatic finals in the tournament’s history.
That defeat became emblematic of Thorne’s career at the top level. Despite twice reaching a career-high world ranking of number seven, he established a reputation as a nearly man, suffering final defeats in several major invitational events including the Irish, Scottish, and Canadian Masters.
Although he was unable to translate his talent into deep runs at the World Championship, reaching the quarter-finals on two occasions, Thorne remained a consistent presence among the game’s leading players throughout the decade.
After retiring from the professional circuit in 2001, Thorne became a prominent television pundit and commentator, further enhancing his popularity with appearances on entertainment programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing. Following long-standing health issues, he passed away in 2020, leaving behind a legacy as one of snooker’s most beloved personalities.
