Xiao Guodong’s Snooker Career
Xiao Guodong turned professional in 2007 after emerging as one of China’s most promising young players, having previously won the Asian Under-21 Amateur Championship. He joined the Main Tour during a formative period for Asian snooker, following the breakthroughs of Ding Junhui and Marco Fu.
His early professional seasons were characterised by steady progress rather than immediate success, with Xiao gradually establishing himself as a consistent tour competitor. He first began to attract wider attention in the mid-2010s, reaching several quarter-finals and semi-finals and demonstrating strong scoring ability against established opponents.
Xiao showed glimpses of his capability in 2013 when he reached the final of the Shanghai Masters, where he finished runner-up to Ding Junhui in snooker’s maiden all-Chinese ranking event title-deciding bout. Around the same period, he also twice finished as a runner-up in the Snooker Shoot Out – underlining his potential with the ultimate confirmation of a breakthrough.
After several seasons of fluctuating results and periods outside the top 32, many considered Xiao as a journeyman but his fortunes dramatically improved in the mid-2020s. In 2024, he claimed his maiden ranking title at the Wuhan Open, defeating Judd Trump in the final to secure a landmark home victory. Not long after, he lost in the final of the prestigious Champion of Champions invitational to Mark Williams.
He successfully defended the Wuhan Open title in 2025, becoming a multiple ranking event winner and an established member of the top 16.
