British Open Second Round Draw

The names were paired off on Tuesday ahead of the next stage at the Morningside Arena.

The second round draw for the British Open has thrown up a few more interesting ties as the competition heads towards the last 64 in Leicester.

Ranking events on the calendar are usually seeded, but the draw for every round in this year’s British Open will be randomly decided.

The process conjured up a couple of mouthwatering first-round clashes, with Mark Allen edging former partner Reanne Evans 3-2 amid a frosty atmosphere, and local boy Mark Selby repeating that scoreline against Shaun Murphy in a repeat of their World Snooker Championship final from May.

With the opening hurdle still to be completed, not every match is fully known, but Selby could be in line to face another tricky obstacle as he takes on former Crucible runner-up Ali Carter next.

Elsewhere, world number one Judd Trump may have to encounter fellow former world champion Stuart Bingham, although the latter still has to come through his opening affair against Robert Milkins.

Stephen Hendry’s reward for beating Chris Wakelin is an upcoming bout against either 1999 champion Fergal O’Brien or Gary Wilson.

John Higgins, who like Hendry triumphed in the old British Open on four occasions, will take on Cao Yupeng – who has returned strongly after making his comeback from a ban for match fixing.

Some of the other fixtures in the second round draw of the British Open that are already set in stone include Dominic Dale’s duel with fellow Welshman Mark Williams, Ken Doherty’s match against Joe O’Connor, and John Astley’s date with recent Championship League winner David Gilbert.

The round of 64 begins on Wednesday evening after the climax to round one, and every game will once again take place over the short best-of-five frames format.

Live coverage continues on ITV4 in Ireland and the UK.
