Andres Petrov stuns Mark Allen in Belfast

Mark Allen’s reign as the Northern Ireland Open champion is over after a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Andres Petrov in Belfast.

The Northern Irishman had won his home event the last two years at the Waterfront Hall, and he was among the heavy favourites again in 2023.

But Estonia’s Petrov put the pressure on by winning the opening two frames, a lead he ultimately never relinquished.

Allen managed to get back on level terms, and at 3-3 the Pistol had an opportunity to survive in the tournament but rattled the final blue against the corner pocket.

Petrov subsequently cleared the three remaining colours for a famous victory, arguably his finest since turning professional in 2022.

Neil Robertson was another high-profile casualty on day two of the venue stages.

The Australian was downed 4-1 by Antrim’s Jordan Brown, who the home fans will now be getting fully behind for the remainder of the competition.

Brown, a former Welsh Open champion, compiled breaks of 94 and 51 to consign Robertson to yet another early defeat in a ranking event.

Meanwhile, there were wins in the last 64 for Shaun Murphy, Jack Lisowski, and Gary Wilson.

Despite making contributions of 122, 117, and 80, Murphy was made to work hard for his victory over Marco Fu.

In what was a repeat of the 2008 UK Championship final, Fu fought back from behind to force a decider which Murphy ultimately took on the final black.

Lisowski’s bid for a maiden ranking title continued with a more routine 4-1 success over Jackson Page, while Gary Wilson repeated that scoreline against Lukas Kleckers.

Among the others through to the last 32 are Aaron Hill and Martin O’Donnell, who have each featured in quarter-finals of recent ranking tournaments on the calendar.

Promising youngster Stan Moody progressed following a 4-1 triumph against Rod Lalwer, and there were wins elsewhere for Matthew Selt, Sean O’Sullivan, Dylan Emery, and Xing Zihao.

Earlier on Monday, the round of 128 concluded with seeds Barry Hawkins, Hossein Vafaei, and Tom Ford all advancing with ease.

On Tuesday, the Northern Ireland Open continues with pre-tournament favourite Judd Trump back in action.
