Tom Ford and Zhang Anda will contest a surprise final in the International Championship on Sunday in Tianjin.
There will be a new ranking event champion by the end of today’s play with both cueists bidding to secure a maiden trophy at this level.
The pair orchestrated respective 9-6 victories from their semi-final clashes on Friday and Saturday.
Ford produced a remarkable burst of heavy scoring during the second session of his last-four showdown with Jordan Brown.
The Englishman trailed 6-5 but strung together the last four frames in lightning fashion with contributions of 133, 101, 109, and 57.
Zhang also fought back from behind to eclipse Ronnie O’Sullivan by the same three-frame margin.
When the 31 year-old let slip a golden opportunity to lead 5-2, it looked as though he had missed the boat.
O’Sullivan appeared to then gain the ascendancy with four frames in a row to lead 6-4, but the Rocket never hit anywhere near his top form and Zhang dominated the remaining five frames.
For both Ford and Zhang, this unexpected appearance in the International Championship final represents their second title-deciding showdown of 2023.
The latter embarked on a maiden run to the last hurdle of a ranking event in October’s English Open, where he was denied the Steve Davis Trophy by Judd Trump.
Ford appeared in the German Masters final at the start of the calendar year where he was well beaten by Ali Carter.
Guaranteed a runners-up cheque worth £75,000, the 40 year-old is already assured of a spot in the world’s top 16 for the first time in his career.
That is good timing for Ford as it means he’ll avoid the qualifiers for the upcoming UK Championship in York, and the prestigious Masters is not far away on the schedule either.
Zhang, meanwhile, could join Ford in the top 16 if he picks up the £175,000 top prize.
The 31 year-old’s rapid rise up the ranks this year has been nothing short of outstanding, especially considering he was long labelled as the best player to never even be ranked inside the world’s top 64.
Success for either Ford or Zhang would additionally provide the bonus of an invitation to next week’s Champion of Champions in Bolton.
Despite both cueists having been members of the tour since the 2000s, they have somewhat oddly never played each other in professional competition.
That’s about to change as they prepare for this International Championship final, granting them both an enormous opportunity to etch their names onto silverware and into the history books.
