Ali Carter continues German Masters defence

Defending champion Ali Carter prolonged his German Masters reign with a 5-1 triumph over Peng Yisong on Tuesday in Berlin.

The recent Masters finalist wasn’t at his best but won a succession of scrappy frames to see off the young Chinese competitor.

Joining the Captain in the last 32 on day two at the Tempodrom were marquee names Judd Trump, Mark Allen, and Neil Robertson.

The latter showed further signs of a long overdue resurgence in form, compiling a 135 and three other big breaks to thrash Jimmy Robertson 5-0.

Trump and Allen had more difficult outings but still managed to come away unscathed from their respective ties with Matthew Stevens and Louis Heathcote.

There were victories elsewhere for Robert Milkins, Ryan Day, Jordan Brown, and Si Jiahui.

The quartet is involved in a very open-looking third quarter of the draw, with last year’s World Championship semi-finalist Si next in action against Alfie Davies.

Amateur Davies advanced after round-of-64 opponent Marco Fu was forced to retire due to health issues concerning his eyes.

The biggest upset of the day, meanwhile, saw Mark Williams bow out of the competition.

The two-time former German Masters champion was well beaten by He Guoqiang, the 23 year-old contributing a brace of tons in the last three frames.

Thepchaiya Un-Nooh stemmed a recent poor run of form to also see off this season’s surprise form player Zhang Anda in a decider.

Among the others to progress were Joe Perry, Zhou Yuelong, Xu Si, and Julien Leclercq.
