Mark Williams reached the venue stages of the inaugural Xi’an Grand Prix with a comfortable 5-0 thrashing of Liam Graham on Friday.
The Welshman compiled breaks of 140, 104, and 72 to ease past the young Scot at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester.
Williams is scheduled to play again on Sunday in the preliminary phase of the Wuhan Open against Allan Taylor.
But it now looks as though the 49 year-old might be withdrawing from that ranking event, if his comments on social media platform X are anything to go by.
“That’s my cue away for a few weeks #byebyecue,” Mark Williams wrote and later replied “no” to a comment asking if he’s got a qualifying match on Sunday.
One player who was forced to pull out of the Xi’an Grand Prix was Luca Brecel, who failed to turn up for his match against Hammad Miah on Friday.
The Belgian Bullet has struggled for form and momentum since capturing the 2023 World Snooker Championship, and his fortunes haven’t turned around this term yet.
It’s unknown precisely why Brecel was absent from the qualifiers, although it has been suggested that he might have run into traffic problems while driving to the venue from Europe.
At any rate, it’s another ranking event where the 29 year-old won’t be earning any ranking points.
Despite being currently ranked as high as number four on the official standings, Brecel is actually down as low as number 51 on the provisional end-of-season rankings.
Elsewhere, Championship League Snooker winner Ali Carter bowed out with an unexpected 5-4 reverse to Daniel Wells.
Jak Jones, however, managed to escape with the same scoreline after winning the last three frames to deny tour rookie Robbie McGuigan.
Among the other high-profile names to make it through were Barry Hawkins, Tom Ford, Joe Perry, Ricky Walden, and Chris Wakelin.
Chinese competitors Pang Junxu, Yuan Sijun, Tian Pengfei, and Xu Si all managed to qualify for what will be their first ranking event of the season on home soil.
Joe O’Connor and Matthew Selt advanced unscathed as well.
There will be one more day of action in the round-of-128 for Xi’an before the next batch of qualifiers for Wuhan begins.
On Saturday, last week’s Shanghai Masters finalists Judd Trump and Shaun Murphy are among the marquee names involved.
The venue stages for the Xi’an Grand Prix start on August 19th.
