Snooker results: Xi’an Grand Prix, Wuhan Open, and British Open qualifiers

Ten days of snooker qualifiers at the Mattioli Arena concluded on Saturday with the remaining results recorded in Leicester.

It was an important period for a lot of players, providing an opportunity to gain an early foothold in the new campaign.

A total of 12 players managed to win all three of their ranking event matches over the course of the last week or so.

Among them was Neil Robertson, who recorded triumphs over Allan Taylor, Andrew Pagett, and Irish former world champion Ken Doherty.

Hossein Vafaei, Si Jiahui, Noppon Saengkham, and Chris Wakelin were others to safely negotiate all three of their preliminary fixtures.

Here is a rundown of the full set of snooker results from each event.

Xi’an Grand Prix

The inaugural Xi’an Grand Prix will take place later in August, representing the next ranking event on the calendar.

With a huge prize fund, it was important for a lot of the players to avoid an early exit from this tournament.

A lot of marquee names had their round-of-128 ties held over to the venue stages, including Ronnie O’Sullivan and Kyren Wilson.

But several big names were forced into the cubicles to get their initial ties in the event completed – including recent Shanghai Masters finalists Judd Trump and Shaun Murphy.

The pair comfortably advanced in addition to the likes of Mark Williams, John Higgins, and Crucible finalist Jak Jones.

World number four Luca Brecel and recent Championship League Snooker winner Ali Carter were among the players who suffered early exits.

The Xi’an Grand Prix runs from August 19-25, with a whopping £177,000 jackpot up for grabs for the champion.

Wuhan Open

Like with the Xi’an Grand Prix, a lot of the marquee names enjoyed the convenience of having their round-of-128 matches in the Wuhan Open deferred.

World number one Mark Allen oddly wasn’t one of those despite his lofty position in the rankings.

The Northern Ireland potter didn’t let that affect his performance, however, and the Pistol easily beat Bai Yulu to qualify for the last 64.

Others to enjoy early success in the Wuhan Open were Murphy, Carter, Jones, and Higgins.

Top eight competitors Luca Brecel and Mark Selby were denied trips back to China, though.

The main stages of the 2024 Wuhan Open take place from October 7-13 with a £140,000 cheque on offer for the eventual winner.

British Open

The last four days of play in Leicester saw the early stages of the Unibet British Open take place.

Unlike the other two ranking events, every member from the world’s top 16 had their initial ties in the British Open held over to the main venue.

Stuart Bingham, Stephen Maguire, and Noppon Saengkham were among those who recorded positive results from this batch of snooker qualifiers.

Boasting a £100,000 top prize, the FA Cup-style British Open takes place from September 23-29 at the Centaur in Cheltenham.

Thanks for all the concise updates these past couple of weeks: it’s good to get a handle on the competitiveness of the field at the start of the season. Allowing for all the stellar names given held-over ties to the full tournaments. Some old pros and some new starters getting useful wins.
