Marco Fu fires Hong Kong 147 break against Stephen Hendry

Marco Fu rolled back the years with a classy 147 break against Stephen Hendry in an exhibition match at the World Grand Prix on Saturday.

The Hong Kong hero delighted his home fans with the maximum break in the deciding frame of a best-of-three frame clash with Hendry.

While it won’t count as an official 147 break, it was still an opportunity for Fu to prove to his legion of fans that he’s still got it.

The 48 year-old, three times a ranking event champion and a former world number five, compiled arguably one of the best 147 breaks in snooker history at the Hong Kong Masters in 2022.

In front of more than 5,000 people, Fu produced a moment of magic to score the perfect break in the deciding frame of his semi-final clash with John Higgins.

There wasn’t quite as much on the line on this occasion, but it was a special knock that the crowd in attendance appreciated nonetheless.

Fu, who still competes on the World Snooker Tour through an invitational tour card, has compiled five official maximum breaks throughout his career.

Hendry, of course, was one of the most prolific break builders the game has ever seen and accumulated 11 maximums over the course of his storied career.

The seven-time world champion, who these days is more widely known for punditry and commentary duties on television, and for his CueTips channel on YouTube, whipped out his smartphone to record the final few shots of Fu’s break.

“It’s cool to be back in Hong Kong playing. I’ve had many, many great memories here,” Hendry told the World Snooker Tour.

“My first time here was in 1987, I think. Just to be in this arena and witness that. Listen, a 147 is a 147.”

“I know they are getting made a lot more these days. But I tell you what, there’s few made to look as easy as that.

“So I had to get the last few balls for social media. I’m an influencer now, I’m not a snooker player.”

There will be another exhibition at the Kai Tak Arena on Sunday with Hendry and Fu each teaming up with young players from the Hong Kong Billiard Sports Academy to compete, with the aim to further promote both the development and legacy of snooker training.

The 2026 World Grand Prix, meanwhile, is down to its semi-final stage with all four players left in the tournament from China.

Zhou Yuelong and Zhang Anda face off in the opening last-four clash while Zhao Xintong entertains Xiao Guodong later on Saturday.

Marco Fu making a great exhibition of himself by the sound of it. It’s a shame he hasn’t been fully fit, or at least fully “match fit” for several seasons now.
