Yes, after what feels like a scarily swift season we are back in Sheffield for the 2016 edition of this 17-day tournament which is hailed as the ‘Marathon of the Mind’.
The best players in the world have been attending the Crucible Theatre since 1977 and in that time there have been 20 different winners of the sport’s blue riband event.
However, while 2015 champion Stuart Bingham prepares for his opening test on Saturday morning against Ali Carter, in the back of his mind he’ll be aware that none of the previous 19 first-time winners at the venue have ever successfully defended the crown.
It has, of course, become well publicised as the ‘Curse of the Crucible’.
