Stephen Hendry made a rare appearance on the World Snooker Tour on Thursday, losing in the Welsh Open qualifiers in Barnsley.
The legendary seven-time world champion still has the opportunity to compete professionally on the back of an invitational tour card.
But Hendry has been an infrequent presence on the circuit over the course of the last couple of seasons.
Indeed, this was only the fifth tournament of the 2023/24 campaign that the 55 year-old had entered and marked his first outing since October.
Unfortunately for his many fans, Hendry’s encounter with countryman Ross Muir ended in similar fashion to his previous four clashes this term.
Four close frames at the start of the fixture were shared, but Muir pulled away at the end of the contest to win 4-2.
You have to go all the way back to the 2021 English Open for Hendry’s last match victory on the main tour.
The former world number one has aspirations of playing in front of big crowds again but openly admits he doesn’t put the required practice in to succeed at this level any more.
Hendry’s latest two-year invitational tour card ends in May, and while it’s widely expected that he’ll be offered another one, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not he accepts.
Elsewhere on the first day of Welsh Open qualifying, there were wins for Scottish Open champion Gary Wilson and former world champion Graeme Dott.
Wilson recorded a 4-1 triumph over Mark Davis while Dott edged a close encounter with Pang Junxu in a decider.
Si Jiahui, a semi-finalist in last year’s World Championship, knocked out former Welsh Open champion Stephen Maguire.
Hossein Vafaei, Chris Wakelin, and Matthew Stevens were among the others to make it through to the venue stages in Llandudno next month.
The preliminary stages for the Welsh Open run until Saturday at the Barnsley Metrodome.
The top 16 seeds, including reigning champion Robert Milkins and world champion Luca Brecel, have had their round-of-128 ties held over.

Part of me hopes Hendry turns it down as he’s not giving himself a reasonable chance of being competitive.
Pleased to see Matthew Stevens qualify for his home event. He made back-to-back centuries. I still hope for one more big run from Carmarthenshire’s finest. He declined far too soon given the level he produced in the late 90s and much of the 2000s.
Stuart Bingham recorded another defeat. The problems that Neil Robertson has had fir the last 12 months have overshadowed Bingham’s struggles but he’s hardly featured in the same time frame.
He also conceded a frame when not requiring snookers. This looks like a reaction of frustration to a career that is currently in reverse.
