Neil Robertson safely through in British Open

Neil Robertson reached the venue stages of the British Open after recording a 4-1 victory over Andrew Pagett on Thursday in Leicester.

The Australian wasn’t at his free-scoring best but still had more than enough in reserve to progress from the qualifying phase at the Mattioli Arena.

It has been a strong start to the 2024/25 snooker season for Robertson, who ended the last term outside the top 16 and without a place in the World Championship draw.

The 42 year-old is undefeated so far during this campaign, a stretch that has included triumphs in all three of the recent qualifiers.

It will provide the former world number one with the foundation he requires to rebuild his career and move back up the rankings.

Elsewhere, Hossein Vafaei and Stephen Maguire were among the other high-profile names to make it through to the last 64 of the British Open.

The pair secured respective 4-1 successes over Mostafa Dorgham and Jiang Jun.

Ricky Walden, meanwhile, was taken the distance before ousting Liu Hongyu in a deciding frame.

There was disappointment for Jimmy White fans with the Whirlwind unable to back up his recent win in the Wuhan Open qualifiers.

Chris Totten produced a fine display with breaks of 87, 86, 64, and 63 seeing off the veteran in a 4-0 defeat.

Chris Wakelin also enjoyed a whitewash win as he coasted to victory against Haydon Pinhey.

Among the others to qualify were Zhou Yuelong, Xu Si, Ashley Carty, and Duane Jones.

The British Open qualifiers continue on Friday with another batch of fixtures, including those involving former ranking event winners Stuart Bingham and Marco Fu.

The top 16 seeds from the world rankings have had their matches in this round held over to the main stages in Cheltenham next month.

Hopefully Robertson is motivated and performing again; it’s been a shame that he’s been missing from the serious business this last couple of years.
